UNREST EP [UNLOG RECORDS]

ABOUT

Unrest EP :

Composed throughout the chaotic noise that was 2020, UNREST is a meditative and textural sonic exploration through concrete sounds and nighttime motifs, an active and immersive listening experience.
Four contemplative recordings, ‘Unrest’ explores new forms of storytelling, as each track explores different aesthetics and textures. ‘Unrest’ establishes an original sound signature that merges tidal synth motions, a hypnotic sound design and organic soundscapes.

« Montreal’s amazing label Unlog brings us a haunting cinematic dirge for our current times, slowly walking you through desolate nocturn landscapes until the heart-stopping finale of ‘A beam of shadow (شعاع من الظل)’ — »
– Music is my Sanctuary

– Behind the Process

FROM PATTERNS TO UNREST [LIMITED CD]

Since the release of ‘Patterns II’ (2015 – Blackelk Recordings), most of my composition and sound design work was oriented towards films, art installations, various A/V and VR projects and remained quite confidential. Few releases appeared during this period and were merely digital archives, destined to account for personal creation milestones, rather that narrative albums or … proper documentation.

2020 was a turning point on different levels and saw both the end of my project Famelik and the beginning of new ones, such as the signature [indistinct voices over PA] which has been reframing my two latest works.

Part of those six years of hard work just found its way into the physical world, in CD form.

ONLINE GALLERY : IN PROGRESS

Over the past decade, our social media habits have slowly eroded the limits to our perceived individuality, our privacy and sense of self.

An impulse for some, an imperative for others : COMPULSIVE posting OF MEMORIES, PIECES OF OURSELVES FOR THE SAKE OF growing and entertaining an online community haS become the new normal.

IS IT STILL YOUR DATA THOUGH?

THIS SERIES gathers content posted OVER A PERIOD OF ALMOST 8 YEARS, BOTH ARTWORKS (including from the ‘KINYOBI’ series) AND PERSONAL MEMORIES, ALL processed through various machine learning MODELS, trainED and cross-breed on cues such as face-recognition AND OBJECT IDENTIFICATION.

The result is an uncanny collection of reprocessed memories, AND distorted lifeforms. A way to face THE MONSTER.

DOWNLOAD YOUR OWN DATA, WHILE YOU STILL CAN.

ABOUT SPACED OUT

From lead artist, Pyaré, SPACED OUT is an underwater VR experience using the revolutionary VR waterproof headset, DiVR by Ballast Technologies. It invites visitors to float on water while breathing with a snorkel, giving an illusion of being immersed onto the lunar surface.

SPACED OUT transports the visitors from earth to the moon, from water to space and from the first to the third person leaving body behind, to reach the moon and then its hollow center.

The trip crosses in a tunnel of lines and points, a trajectory of the Earth on the surface of the moon, where the last Apollo 11 mission landed. SPACED OUT’s narration is composed by original audio archives of the communication between the three astronauts and the mission control. The running audio track clashes with the abstract 3D visual representation of what the 19th century writers believed the moon looked like. The piece is like a magic trick: simulating absence of gravity it bypasses the brain’s predispositions for an immersion of all senses.

WHAT REMAINS AFTER WE’RE GONE – [SOUNDTRACK]

Nicolas Lachapelle

« A group of jilted souls have found refuge inside a forsaken neighbourhood scorched by brutal violence, fire and destruction. They try to build themselves a home but the memories of the place still walk among them. A sensorial reflexion about what we leave of us in the place we’ve been. »

Lumières sur l’eau – [SOUNDTRACK]

Ariel St-Louis Lamoureux & Nicolas Lachapelle

« Lights Above Water is a documentary created with the children of Waswanipi, a Cree community in Northern Quebec (James Bay Cree). Influences from various sources color the daily life of the community. Rejecting and taking ownership of the cultural elements, the children of Waswanipi build their own specific identity. Over a year, they guide us through their expression of this identity and they question the future of their own generation. »

ROBOTS OF BRIXTON (2010)

KIBWE TAVARES

« Brixton has degenerated into a disregarded area inhabited by London’s new robot workforce – robots built and designed to carry out all of the tasks which humans are no longer inclined to do. The mechanical population of Brixton has rocketed, resulting in unplanned, cheap and quick additions to the skyline. The film follows the trials and tribulations of young robots surviving at the sharp end of inner city life, living the predictable existence of a populous hemmed in by poverty, disillusionment and mass unemployment. When the Police invade the one space which the robots can call their own, the fierce and strained relationship between the two sides explodes into an outbreak of violence echoing that of 1981. »
